Bextra Side Effects

Clinical studies indicate that Bextra may increase the risk of suffering a heart attack or stroke. The drug also is known to cause Stevens Johnson Syndrome, a serious condition leading to death in approximately 30 percent of all cass.

Bextra belongs to the Cox-2 family of arthritis drugs. In recent months, much attention has been focused on the safety of these drugs following news of the Vioxx recall. Vioxx, a drug similar to Bextra, has been found to increase the risk of heart attack between two- and four-fold. Vioxx was withdrawn from the market in September 2004. Reports indicate as many as 130,000 may have suffered a heart attack or stroke as a result of Vioxx.

Within two weeks of the announcement of the Vioxx withdrawal, Pfizer announced that a study conducted by the American Heart Association demonstrated that Bextra more than doubled the risk of heart attack and stroke in high-risk patients. This prompted the FDA to warn physicians about the safety of the drug.

In December 2004, the FDA announced it was closely reviewing the safety of Bextra and encouraged doctors to prescribe alternative drugs until the agency's review was complete. There is some speculation that the FDA may be inclined to recall Bextra.

Bextra and Your Health

If you are currently taking Bextra, you should meet with your physician to discuss alternatives. You should not stop using the medication unless your doctor instructs you to do so.
